Invitation to the Faculty Seminar<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

We invite all employees and students to the faculty seminar, during which a lecture will be delivered by our Faculty\u2019s guest: Prof. Paul Hoskisson<\/strong> (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Title of the lectures: Chance and necessity: Understanding domestication and evolution in antibiotic-producing Streptomyces<\/em> bacteria<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract:
The increasing burden of antimicrobial resistance is a major global health concern. In parallel, the discovery of new antimicrobials and particularly new classes of antimicrobials has also declined significantly, resulting in an urgent need to develop and discover new antimicrobials and to improve production of existing molecules. Currently around two-thirds of our clinical antimicrobials (and other useful bioactive metabolites) are produced by the bacterial genus Streptomyces<\/em>, in large-scale submerged fermentations, using strains that have been improved empirically through random mutagenesis over many years. Whilst this approach to strain improvement is successful at yielding high-producing strains, it is often time consuming and can take years to yield commercially viable results. Understanding the nature of artificial selection in Streptomyces<\/em> strains that has led to commercially viable antibiotic yields can be useful in the development of new antibiotics. This seminar will discuss the development of the industrial clavulanic acid producing lineage of S. clavuligerus<\/em>, to attempts to understand the domestication and evolution of industrial Streptomyces<\/em> strain lineages. This will be further expanded to discuss the evolution of engineering biology chassis strains of Streptomyces<\/em>. Chassis strains are a central component of engineering biology for expression from exogenous genetic constructs. Engineering biology applies engineering principles to biological systems, to create specific functionalities and is crucial to the future of biotechnology. Unlike in engineering, biological systems are subject to selection and evolution that can alter properties of both the chassis strain and constructs contained within. The seminar will discuss the evolution of Streptomyces<\/em> chassis strains as a vehicle for heterologous expression of antibiotic biosynthetic gene clusters and the implications for understanding these strains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
