At BSc Biotechnology studies you will:
- acquire the knowledge required for understanding of biological structures and processes,
- develop the skills in application of various experimental techniques in the area of molecular biology and biochemistry,
- learn methods and tools used for collection, analysis and presentation of data during professional work,
- become prepared to conduct independent or collaborative research projects,
- have the opportunity to participate in international exchange programs, such as Erasmus.
The program lasts 3 years (6 semesters). Biotechnology students have access to modern, well-equipped laboratories. Our lecturers are experts in the field of biotechnology and have extensive experience in both scientific research and industrial practice. The faculty’s research activities are closely linked to the teaching program and the best students are given the opportunity to actively participate in research projects. To develop their interests, students can join student science clubs. The graduate of the first-cycle studies in biotechnology has advanced knowledge in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology and related areas, is able to apply this knowledge in biotechnology, is prepared to work in the laboratory, design scientific experiments, apply appropriate experimental methods and analyse the results. The graduates can choose from a wide range of career opportunities: research and development, pharmaceutical, food and agricultural industries, healthcare, clinical diagnostics, clinical research, environmental protection, biomedical engineering, scientific services and equipment supply. The degree also enables graduates to continue their education (master studies in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry etc).
ADMISSION FOR FOREIGN CANDIDATES
- Start of registration: Feb 2026
- Application deadline: Jul 2026
- Announcement of the list of admitted students: Aug 2026
- Link to the recruitment process: https://rekrutacja.uni.wroc.pl/
- Entry requirements for all candidates:
A) International Candidates except those holding IB or Nowa Matura need to take and internal exam (on-line interview) Admissions are conducted on a rolling basis.
The exam is conducted by the admissions committee as an online interview via MS_Teams. The interview date is selected by candidates through the IRC system (after all required documents have been submitted and verified).
The internal exam is scored on a scale of 0–20 points, with a minimum of 10 points required to pass. The interview result is entered into the system within 24 hours of the interview. Candidates who receive a positive decision will receive a Letter of Offer within the following 24 hours.
Scope of material:
– cell structure (structure and functions of cell organelles in eukaryotes; comparison between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells);
– structure and biological function of biomolecules (sugars, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids);
– basic processes of genetic information transmission (replication, transcription, and translation; genetic code);
– basics of human physiology (blood composition and its role in the human body, human immune system, digestive enzymes);
– main metabolic pathways of the cell (aerobic respiration, fermentation, photosynthesis, glycolysis, citric acid cycle, respiratory chain);
– biotechnology – examples of applications in the pharmaceutical industry and agriculture;
– definitions of basic chemical concepts (Avogadro’s number, mole, molar quantity, mass, weight, viscosity, density, osmosis, diffusion, mass number, isotopes, pH).
Literature: Michael L. Cain, Lisa A. Urry, Steven A. Wasserman: Campbell Biology.
B) International Candidates with International Baccalaureate (IB)
Admission will be based on the results of the IB examinations (two mandatory subjects chosen from biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics plus an additional subject – English) with each score converted into points using the specified coefficients, and candidates with the highest total points within the available places will be offered admission. The ranking list will be announced according to deadlines. Please search our website for the update.
| Subjects | Coefficient Standard Level (SL) | Coefficient Higher Level (HL) |
| Mandatory subject (2 from 4) : biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics | 0,7 | 1,3 |
| Additional subject (optional) : English | 0,1 | 0,25 |
C) International Candidates with Polish “Nowa Matura”
Admission will be based on the results of the Polish Nowa Matura examinations in the subjects listed in the table below. Each examination result, expressed as a percentage, will be multiplied by the specified coefficient (see table below). If an examination was taken at two levels, the higher score will be considered.
Candidates who have not taken an optional subject listed below will receive 0 points for that examination but may still participate in the recruitment process.
The ranking list will be created based on the total number of points obtained. In case of candidates with the same total points, the order on the ranking list will be determined successively by the number of points obtained in the Nowa Matura examinations in: chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics at the advanced level, and mathematics at the standard level.
Candidates with the highest total points within the available places will be offered admission. The ranking list will be announced according to deadlines. Please search our website for the update.
| Subjects | Coefficient Standard Level (SL) | Coefficient Higher Level (HL) |
| Mandatory subject (1 from 2) : biology, chemistry | – | 1,0 |
| Additional subject (optional) : biology*, chemistry*, physics | – | 1,0 |
| Additional subject (optional) : mathematics | 0,5 | 1,0 |
*if the subject is not listed as a mandatory
